The first shark-like species have been passed down from the Devonian period (400 - 350 million years ago). The largest known shark species Otodus megalodon grew around 18 meters long and lived until 2,6 million years ago. However, rumours persist that small populations of the Megalodon might have survived. On this page, we also show photographs and pictures of extinct shark species as we generally view sharks as living fossils.
